The North Shore has just gone through a major flood event, with widespread property damage, rescues, and continuing recovery efforts as the area dries out. A boil-water advisory was also issued for parts of the North Shore during the event.

For properties with onsite wastewater systems, flooding can create problems that are not always obvious right away. EPA guidance notes that after flooding:

1. Drain fields may not work properly while soils remain saturated

2. Septic or pump tanks can take in silt and debris

3. Broken lines or hidden damage may not show up until normal water use resumes

4. Homeowners should avoid assuming the system is functioning normally just because drains still appear to work
